Call for Applications: 2023 Shansi Prize
Oberlin Shansi is accepting submissions for the 2023 Shansi Prize. The nomination form (for faculty) and the application form (for students) are available here on our website. The deadline for submissions is Sunday, May 7, 2023 at 11:59 p.m.
The Shansi Prize is designed to reward graduating seniors for meritorious student scholarship on topics relating to Asia or Asian Diasporas. The project may take any one of various forms: written work, class project, research project, music composition or performance. Submissions are not restricted to any one major: students from all disciplines and majors are eligible for this award. To have a project entered for consideration, it must be nominated by a member of the Oberlin College faculty or staff.
The Shansi Prize is awarded annually, coinciding with the end of the academic year. We encourage faculty and staff to nominate students whose work they believe demonstrates an exceptional understanding of an aspect of Asia, and is based on the values of mutual understanding, respect, and learning. The Shansi Prize is for the amount of $500. The nomination form (for faculty) and the application form (for students) are here.
Recent Shansi Prize awardees include Noah Kawaguchi ‘22 and Yan Lou ‘22. Kawaguchi earned the Shansi Prize through his submission of his independent research project in approaches to Asian American music and the shakuhachi, the Japanese bamboo flute. Yan Lou also received the Shansi Prize in 2022 for their work on an impressive senior psychology thesis about the impact of child-parent contact on Chinese International students’ stress levels.
