About

  • Each year Oberlin Shansi awards Fellowships to China, India, Indonesia, and Japan. Fellows work with Shansi’s long-term partners - including universities, non-governmental organizations, and a United Nations Agency - for approximately two years.

  • Fellowships are open to all graduating seniors and alumni within three years of their graduation, regardless of major, at both the College of Arts and Sciences and the Conservatory of Music. No prior international experience is required. Shansi provides Fellows with a comprehensive orientation, relevant professional preparation, and intensive language training.

  • Fellows’ responsibilities vary from site to site. At our university partners in Indonesia, China, and Japan, Fellows may serve as English Instructors and often assist with international programs, extracurricular activities, and arts initiatives. At our NGO and UN partners in India and Japan, Fellows collaborate with local communities on projects centered on public health, peace education, environmental sustainability, and human rights. Candidates are encouraged to research each site prior to applying.

  • Oberlin Shansi is committed to open and fair selection of participants in all of its programs, and considers without prejudice all eligible applicants regardless of an individual's race, color, caste, sex, national or ethnic origin, caste, marital status, religion, creed, disability, age, military or veteran status, sexual orientation, and gender identity and expression.

  • Non-US citizens are encouraged to speak with Shansi staff early in the application process to discuss available opportunities.

In January 2025, Shansi will be accepting applications for:

*The Keystone Fellowship is currently a 1-year opportunity due to visa regulations. Shansi and Keystone staff can consider renewing the a fellowship for a year (or shorter) if the fellow is able to renew their visa or holds an OCI card.

** Shansi will not be accepting applications for the Independent Fellowship, Beijing Normal University, Lady Doak College, or Hiroshima this year. For any questions about future opportunities, please contact Ted Samuel (tsamuel@oberlin.edu).
