Winter Term 2025

During January 2025, Kisa worked with Asian Network of Trust (ANT), in Hiroshima Japan, studying peace and anti-nuclear education, understanding communication styles within peace NGOs, and working on English communication for the organization. Specifically, Kisa worked with ANT founder Tomoko Watanabe and current Shansi Fellow Sophie Qano to learn how to conduct peace education and atomic bomb awareness at Oberlin, specifically involving atomic bomb survivor trees (which Oberlin has two of!)

Upon completion of her grant, Kisa reflects:

“My time with ANT (Asian Network of Trust) in Hiroshima, Japan, was deeply impactful and taught me about the nuances of peace education (specifically concerning nuclear peace), working in a grassroots organization, and Japanese work culture. Activities I conducted included: English communication (verbal and digital), Japanese to English translation, welcoming and hosting a variety of international guests, participating in an anti-nuclear candle lighting event, working with Atomic Bomb survivor trees, and creating promotional materials for the organization. Two of my biggest takeaways from this internship were the vital role of young people in peace education and creation, and the importance of the inclusion of ALL people affected by nuclear technology in anti-nuclear efforts. My internship with ANT was unforgettable, and will have a lasting impact on me and the way I conduct myself within a world that is still working towards peace!”
