Announcing the 2024 Shansi Prize Winner

Oberlin Shansi would like to congratulate Lanie Cheatham ‘24 on winning the 2024 Shansi Prize.

Lanie Cheatham ‘24

Shansi received an impressive pool of nominations from various academic disciplines. Lanie was selected this year for the prize which recognizes the work of a graduating senior that demonstrates an exceptional understanding of an aspect of Asia and is based on the values of mutual understanding, respect and learning.

Lanie’s work did just this. Her honors project titled “The Ornamental Self: Reassembling Korean/American Identity Through Art” was nominated by Dr. Carmen Merport Quiñones, Assistant Professor of Comparative American Studies and received the designation of highest honors from an interdisciplinary faculty committee representing the departments of Comparative American Studies, English, and Studio Art. Lanie’s project and nomination stood out for her nuanced and thoughtful approach to the challenging topic of objectification of Korean and Korean American women in the art she created. Lanie’s exploration of Korean American identity that engaged different traditional art forms with found materials was compelling and challenged us to reconsider how we view these objects.

You can read more about Lanie’s work on the Shansi Prize page.

Congratulations, Lanie!
