Congratulations to the 2019 Oberlin Shansi In-Asia Grant winners!
Oberlin Shansi has awarded In-Asia Grants to four engaging projects for Winter Term 2019. Students who major in Dance, Economics, Biology, Computer Science, and Art History will travel to the Philippines, Cambodia, India, and Taiwan to complete artistic and research-oriented projects.
Kara Nepomuceno ’20 will travel to the Philippines to study pangalay dance in Manila with AlunAlun Dance Circle, a traditional dance group founded by artist and scholar Ligaya Amibangsa. She plans to share what she learns in an open dance workshop and discussion at Oberlin.
Kenneth Kitahata ’20 will travel to Battambang, Cambodia to work at the NGO HelpAge Cambodia. He will learn how villages address aging by engaging with HelpAge’s 160 Older People’s Associations, village based groups that support older people through collective holdings of rice and cows, home-based healthcare, and a community revolving fund.
Julia Pindaro ’20 will help chart data from disease research studies in Hyderabad, India while learning about India’s healthcare system. To understand varying access to healthcare in India, she will shadow a doctor who treats primarily middle and upper class citizens, and one that primarily treats those under-served.
Sheng Kao ’20 and Jennifer Lin ’20 will spend Winter Term in Taipei, Taiwan creating a multimedia, online zine in order to share and reflect on the political issues LGBTQ activists and citizens in Taiwan are currently experiencing. They will collaborate with New Bloom Magazine and visit LGBTQ community centers and historically significant sites.
Oberlin Shansi will have a second application deadline to apply for 2019 summer In-Asia Grants. Winners will be awarded up to $1,500 dollars to do a project in Asia. The deadline to apply is March 22nd, 2019. More information can be found here: http://www.shansi.org/in-asia-grant-app.
