Announcing the New Cohort of Shansi Fellows!

Congratulations to the 2019 Oberlin Shansi Fellows!

Eight Oberlin students have been selected as new Shansi Fellows for 2019. Seven graduating seniors and one recent graduate will head to China, India, Indonesia, and Japan this summer for intensive language study before embarking on their Fellowships. These talented, adventurous, and engaged Obies will work with Shansi’s partner NGOs and universities.

Two of the new fellows will be going to China. Mackenzie Lew (’19), a History and Comparative American Studies major will work at Beijing Normal University. Le’Priya White (’19), a Sociology major, will teach English at Shanxi Agricultural University.

For India, Kiran Melnyk (’17), an Environmental Studies major, will be placed at Jagori Grameen Rural Charitable Trust in Himachal Pradesh in Northern India. Kate Little (December, ’19), a double major in English and Environmental Studies, will serve as an officer at the International Studies Center at Lady Doak College in Madurai, Tamil Nadu.

Our Indonesia fellows are Sydney Allen (’19), an English Major, and Nikaio Thomashow (December ’19), a dance major. Both Sydney and Niko will teach and support student academic writing at Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta.

In Japan, Emily Eisenstein (’19), a Psychology major, and Sara Chang (’19), a Neuroscience major, will join the English Language Teaching Faculty at JF Oberlin University in Machida City, outside Tokyo.
