Announcing the 2022 Shansi Fellows

We are excited to announce the selection of nine new 2022 Shansi Fellows. Eight Fellows will be working with Shansi’s partners in China, India, Indonesia, and Japan, and one Independent Fellow will work with an activist think tank in the Philippines.

Our new China Fellows are Chloe Lai ’22, a double-major in Art History and East Asian Studies and Mikael Frey ’22, a Biochemistry major with a pre-medical concentration. They will teach English at Shanxi Agricultural University.

We have two new Indonesia Fellows. Colby Fortin ’22, a Comparative American Studies and Politics double major, will be teaching at Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta. Jack Stevens ’22, an Economics major, will be teaching at Syiah Kuala University in Banda Aceh.

In Japan, Leo Ross ‘21, who majored in Comparative American Studies with minors in Rhetoric and Composition and History, will join the English Language teaching faculty at JF Oberlin University in Machida. Benjamin Echikson ’22, who majored in Economics and East Asian Studies with a concentration in International Affairs, will work in Hiroshima with the United Nations Institute for Training and Research, and nongovernmental organizations ANT-Hiroshima and Green Legacy Hiroshima.

Two Fellows will be going to India. Isabel Tadmiri ’21, a Neuroscience major with Politics and Environmental Studies minors, will be joining the Keystone Foundation in the Nilgiri Biosphere of South India. Phoebe von Conta ’22, a Hispanic Studies and Environmental Studies double major, will serve at the International Studies Center at Lady Doak College in Madurai, Tamil Nadu.

Our Independent Fellow is Isaak Cagampang Heller ’22, a double-major in Mathematics and Economics with a minor in Sociology. He will be working for the Philippine branch of Focus on the Global South, an activist think tank that works on the political economy of development, power and democracy.
