Announcing the 2018 Shansi Fellows
Congratulations to the 2018 Oberlin Shansi Fellows!
Seven Oberlin students have been selected as new Shansi Fellows for 2018. Five graduating seniors and two recent graduates will head to China, India, Indonesia, and Japan this summer for intensive language study before embarking on their two-year Fellowships (with one exception – the Fellow at Beijing Normal University is appointed for only one year). These adventurous Obies will work with NGOs, universities, and in the case of the new Independent Fellow, with a social enterprise.
The newly selected Fellows are Andrew Boor ’18, Austin Cope ‘15, Sydney Garvis ’18, Radia Lahlou ‘18, Jingyi Laura Li ’18, Xin Jenny Luan ‘18, and Leah Wood ‘16. We are excited to announce the award of Shansi’s first Independent Fellowship this year. The Independent Fellowship offers a highly motivated Oberlin senior or recent alumnus the opportunity to create a full-time Shansi Fellowship in China, India, Indonesia, or Japan. It is an exceptional opportunity for a creative and responsible Fellow to experience deep cultural immersion while developing academic and professional skills, building networks with peers and counterparts, contributing to a host institution, and pursuing knowledge of an issue or field.
Oberlin Shansi is an independent, nonprofit organization promoting understanding and communication between Oberlin and Asia. Founded in 1908, it is one of the oldest educational exchange programs in the United States. The Shansi Fellowships support recent graduates working, learning, and teaching in university and nongovernmental organization partners in China, India, Indonesia, and Japan. Other Shansi programs include In-Asia Grants for Oberlin students to undertake independent projects in Asia during summer and Winter Term, Visiting Scholar awards that enable faculty and staff from Asian partner institutions to spend a semester or year at Oberlin, and various on-campus programs at Oberlin.
