Lissette Lorenz graduated in May 2012 with a major in Environmental Studies, where she completed an honors thesis on the use of community-based theater as a tool for empowering environmental justice communities. She received a Mellon Mays Undergraduate Research Fellowship to support her research, which was strongly tied to her volunteer work at Save Our Children in Elyria, OH, where she taught Theater of the Oppressed to youth. Her teaching experience includes volunteering at Harrison Cultural Community Center in Lorain, OH where she taught beginner’s level Japanese to 1-3rd grade elementary school students. Lissette served as a private English tutor in Japan and was also a teaching assistant in a 5th grade class there. Some of her other interests include dancing of all kinds, from swing and contra to salsa and merengue. During her time as a Shansi Fellow, Lissette established GLEE, or Great Language Engagement in English, an extracurricular group for English language students that culminated in a theatrical performance. In the fall of 2013, the Japan fellows founded a club called “Great Language Engagement in English,” or “GLEE.” GLEE’s main purpose is to provide an alternative venue in which English language students can develop their language skills outside of the classroom.
