Jagori Grameen, India (2013-15)

Kiran Puri pursued an individual major in South Asian Studies and a Premed Concentration. Captain of the OC Varsity Field Hockey Team, a Student Worker at Oberlin Community Services, and Co-Treasurer of Asia House, Kiran grew up speaking Hindi in her home. Her last semester at Oberlin, she taught n ExCo course in conversational Hindi. She also served as a tutor for AmericaCounts at Langston Middle School, and worked with the OC Athletic Department to help sponsor a program called “Kids Night Out” that seeks to engage 1ST-5TH graders on Friday nights with creative activities and games. Kiran looked at the Fellowship at Jagori Grameen as not only an opportunity to learn about public health challenges in the area, but also as a chance to engage in discussions of the difficulties that women experience in rural India.

In my first couple months as a Shansi fellow at Jagori Grameen in India, I missed little from my life in the states. The food was great, the people were warm and caring, and work was exciting. But there was something missing. Something that had been a part of my identity for over 10 years, and had suddenly been cut out: sports.
