Bridging Cultures Through Music, Family History, and Social Studies: A Cross-Cultural Exploration in Malaysia and Singapore

During Winter 2024, the Pandan Quartet participated in the Singapore Chamber Music Festival. They had the opportunity to create a strong link between the Singapore and Oberlin conservatories, meeting and becoming friends with Singaporian and Malaysian chamber musicians. The Singapore Chamber Music Festival provided them a platform to work closely with accomplished musicians and experienced chamber ensembles, including the AOI trio. The exposure to diverse musical interpretations and collaborative experiences enhanced their group sound, musicianship, and ensemble playing. Besides participating in the festival, a few of the Pandan musicians participated in individual side-projects, including Erhu Lessons, Japanese Cultural Exploration, and the Study of Racism in Malaysia.
