Jagori Grameen, India (2015-17)

Emmanuel Greenberg grew up in the Pacific Northwest in Seattle and Portland. At Oberlin he was an Economics major with a Mathematics concentration who has developed a strong passion for architecture and design, refining these interests through Art and Art History courses at Oberlin, studio courses at the Harvard Graduate School of Design and experience working with professional architects and carpenters at drw design build. Emmanuel has also immersed himself in the administrative side of art by serving as a Student Ambassador for the Art Department and working as a web designer for the Art Library. Emmanuel is a tutor and mentor for the Ninde Scholars Program, which pairs Oberlin College students with rising first-generation students from the Oberlin high school and middle school. He is excited to explore the rich architectural environment of northern India (as well as the beauty of the Himalayas). At Jagori Grameen, Emmanuel looks forward to creating meaningful cross-cultural relationships and hopes to explore sustainable architecture as a platform for community development. A performance drummer in the States who is enthusiastic about world music, Emmanuel hopes to collaborate with the Jagori community in a variety of mediums and methods. He sees this Fellowship as the beginning of long-term Hindi language study and a chance to explore his heritage as an Asian American.

It is unusually cold today. The bright sun is here but the air has yet to catch up. I walk out the large metal gate in front of my rented flat and my eyes fall on the piles of brick, concrete, and sand in front of me. The piles are not separated by material. There are bricks stuffed in the sand and dirt running through the slate tiles. The group of workers are a bustling of bodies—men, women, and children—haphazardly assembling the building in progress.

Susan Sontag writes that all people hold dual citizenship, “in the kingdom of the well and in the kingdom of the sick.” For the first time in my life I have been able to use my passport and enter into the kingdom of the sick, if only as a visitor.
