Professor Norman Craig OC '53 has passed away at 89

It is with great sadness that I bring the news that Professor Norman Craig passed away on Sunday, March 7, 2021 at Kendal at Oberlin. Norm was a legend in the Oberlin community. After he graduated from Oberlin in 1953, Norm served on the chemistry faculty from 1957 to 2000, and then as a professor emeritus since his retirement.

You can read about Norm’s remarkable life and career at https://www.oberlin.edu/news/norm-craig-53-emeritus-professor-chemistry-dies-89. To the Shansi community, Norm was a dedicated supporter, serving numerous terms on the Board of Trustees, including as chair from 1984 to 1989. He lectured in China in 1982 and served as a mentor to numerous Shansi Visiting Scholars over the decades. As recently as 2015, Norm supported Lady Doak College professor Padmaja Sankararaj’s research during her time at Oberlin.

Please join the Shansi team in sending Shansi’s condolences to Norm’s family, and in recognizing his contributions to Oberlin Shansi’s work building bridges between Asia and the United States.
