Introducing the 2021 Fellows to Indonesia
Please join us in welcoming our new Indonesia Fellows; Samantha Perez ‘21 will be teaching at Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta while Corrie Purcell ‘21 and Luci Ostheimer ‘21 will be going to Syiah Kuala University in Banda Aceh.
Samantha Perez '21 is a Sociology and Latin American Studies double major. As a Bonner Scholar, she has dedicated over two years to the El Centro Volunteer Initiative as a Program Coordinator and tutor for US Citizenship and English classes. Her interest in language learning and teaching began during her time abroad learning Spanish in Guadalajara, Mexico and continued through her internship with GirlForward, where she taught English to high school girls with refugee backgrounds. In the summer of 2020, Samantha interned with the Chicago Transit Authority, crafting and delivering professional development curriculum virtually to Chicago youth. She has also been involved in Oberlin Student Cooperative Association (OSCA) and enjoys cooking meals with friends in Third World Co-op. Samantha looks forward to exploring Javanese culture and furthering her teaching career through the Shansi Fellowship.
Corrie Purcell ‘21 is a Philosophy major from Fayetteville Arkansas who has gained considerable experience during her time at Oberlin. She has worked for America Counts, participated in the Philosophy in the Schools program, and served as a winter intern for the Brooklyn New School. In her final year at Oberlin, she was a teaching assistant for Oberlin’s English for Speakers of Other Languages program and began work as a Writing Associate in Oberlin’s Writing Center. Both these experiences deepened her sense of pedagogy and gave her the tools to apply the teaching experience she already had to work with her peers. She hopes to continue learning more about language-teaching pedagogy through her work with Shansi. Outside of these formative teaching experiences, Corrie is a captain of the Oberlin Cross Country Track and Field Team, a barista at Slow Train, and leads the occasional tour for Admissions. She intends to pursue high energy, people-focused roles like these both in her work for Shansi and beyond.
Luci Ostheimer ‘21, will graduate from Oberlin College with a degree in Cinema Studies and minors in East Asian Studies and Religion.While at Oberlin, Luci has loved being a part of OSCA, where she served as a head cook at Tank for a semester. During the summer of 2019, Luci went to Tainan, Taiwan where she studied at National Chen Kung University as a part of Taiwan United States Alliance program. The following fall, she studied abroad in Yunnan, China where she had the opportunity to learn about Traditional Chinese Medicine and minority groups across the province. An avid supporter of education accessibility, Luci used her knowledge as a film editor in the summer of 2020 to help create videos for Discovery Crew, an Oberlin-student founded education organization focused on bringing scientific experiments and discovery to kids stuck in quarantine. In her free time, Luci loves spending time with her pets, keeping up to date with the latest in Chinese cinema, hiking, and making art.
