In-Asia Grants Webinar: Reports from Okinawa and Sri Lanka

Please join Oberlin Shansi for a Zoom program at 7 pm EDT on May 3, 2024 featuring reports from two recent In-Asia Grant recipients who undertook fascinating projects in Colombo, Sri Lanka and Okinawa, Japan.

 Rohil Navani ’25, an Economics and Politics double major, will discuss his summer 2023 work at Verité Research, a think tank in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Rohil assisted with research on the economic crisis in Sri Lanka that focused on projections for debt and pensions restructuring. He also conducted research on the gender-pay gap in Sri Lanka and the South Asia region.

 Arthur Hoffman ’26, a Politics and East Asian Studies double major, will discuss his January 2024 Winter-Term project exploring the hip-hop scene in Okinawa, Japan. Arthur interviewed artists and community members, and explored connections to the American military presence and Okinawan identity.

After a hiatus due to the global pandemic, Oberlin Shansi resumed the In-Asia Grants program in Summer 2023 and January 2024. These grants support Oberlin College & Conservatory students undertaking Winter-Term and Summer independent projects in Asia.
